D-Day by Stephen Ambrose D-Day by Stephen Ambrose
One of my favorite books from one of my favorite historians. A powerful and detailed account of the struggle and sacrifices made by the men who invaded France on June 6, 1944. The account of a terrible day of sacrifices that demonstrates that there were thousands of heroes and countless acts of bravery. A perfect cure for the ignorance of war induced by too many Rambo movies. Citizen Soldiers. picks up the story from June 7 through the Surrender of Germany. Band of Brothers follows E Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne from basic training through th war. All of these books are great books that tell the story of World War II largely from the perspective of the average soldier.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction by John Stewart & company
Just a really smart, funny book about politics.
Parliament of Whores: A Lone Humorist Attempts to Explain the Entire U.S. Government by P. J. O'Rourke
Image if Rush Limbaugh were smart or funny. P. J. O'Rourke's book is one of the funniest books about poltics ever written. The perfect book to irritate your liberal friends.
Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot by Al Franken
Al Franken was funny until he started taking himself so seriously. The perfect book to irritate your conservative friends.
Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid on Earth Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware
This is one of the most interesting and original books you'll see. A must read for anyone who wants to be an artist. I watched Chris Ware develop as an comic artist in the 1980s as he studied Krazy Kat and other comics. I'm sure the next generation of comic strip artists will be reading Chris Ware. See my Chris Ware page for more on his early career.
Mutts III - More Shtuff Mutts III : More Shtuff by Patrick McDonnell
The warm, upbeat message of Patrick McDonnell's cartoon strip provides a little balance to my cyncial side. Even Matt Groening of The Simpsons saids, "Mutts cheers me up everyday. It's not only sweet, simple, and funny--a rare combination--it's also the best drawn comic strip around." Life through the eyes of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat makes for great reading for animal lovers of any age. Other Mutts books: Cats and Dogs : Mutts II, Yesh! : Mutts IV, Our Mutts: Five, A Little Look-See: Mutts 6, Mutts Sundays and Mutts : Sunday Mornings
Butt Naked Baby Blues : A Baby Blues Treasury Butt Naked Baby Blues: A Baby Blues A Baby Blues Treasury by Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott
Baby Blues is to parenting what Dilbert is to the business world. The collections include: She Started It!, This is Going to be Harder Than We Thought, Wall-To-Wall Baby Blues , I Shouldn't Have To Scream More Than Once!, Lift and Separate, Never A Dry Moment , Dad To The Bone, Baby Blues Unplugged, and (my with my favorite title) Night Of The Living Dad
Rose Is Rose in Loving Color Rose Is Rose in Loving Color by Pat Brady
Rose is Rose captures the extraordinary lives of an ordinary family. The romance between Rose and Jimbo captures some of the fun of romance that makes marriage great long after the honeymoon. Other great collections:Rose is Rose Right on the Lips, High Spirited Rose Is Rose , The Irresistible Rose Is Rose, Rose Is Rose: 15th Anniversary Collection, and (if it's still available) Rose Is Rose: It Takes Two to Tickle
The Dilbert Principle The Dilbert Principle by Scott Adams
One of the earliest Dilbert books. A great blend of his best cartoons and oddest business advice. An unfortunately accurate glimpse into the real world.
You probably don't need me to tell you about Harry Potter. I've read these books so that when it's my turn to read to my daughter at night I know what's going on. These are very good books and should not be regarded simply as kids' books. Book 1: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3), Book 4: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Book 4), and Book 5: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a little too intense for the youngest readers, but it's well written.

If you want to listen to them on CD (as I do on my long drives on my research trips), you can get them on CD. The narration is excellent and you'll learn how to pronouce all those odd names. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Lone Star Nation : How a Ragged Army of Volunteers Won the Battle for Texas Independence - and Changed America by H.W. Brands
I'm not an expert on Texas history, but this was an enjoyable history of the creation of Texas.
The Good Citizen: A History of American Civic Life by Michael Schudson
A very nice history of the development of elections in America.
